isiqalo trust

A living story – a simple beginnig

Isiqalo started with a simple act that was inspired by a philosophy “Die vraag na etiek word beantwoord deur die vraag na estetika.” – DJ Louw

Where it began

For Isiqalo, that first step was taken at Matjiesrivier Primary School — a place where something small would grow into something meaningful.

That small beginning grew into something more:
A space of care
A place of pride.

A reminder that change begins with first steps, a place where beauty could be experienced daily

ISIQALO ACTIVITIES

Creating a space of beauty

Fruit left on trees after harvest was picked and sold, flowers and a tree was bought. The flowers were planted in old tyres.
Learners and staff began to care for them — watering, tending and taking ownership.

Slowly, the space began to change.

Grass was planted.Trees were added. Walkways were built. Flowerpots were placed across the school grounds. What was created was more than a garden. More than a project

This first step captured the heart of Isiqalo.

Not large interventions — but meaningful, relational change. Not quick results — but something that grows over time.

It showed that when people are part of the process, they begin to see their own value reflected in what they create.

The school

Matjiesrivier Primary School was established in 1942 by a missionary and his wife. From the beginning, its doors were open to all who wished to attend. The first teacher, Mr Apollos, played a foundational role in the life of the school. Dr Beets later became involved and contributed a pedal organ. This history forms part of the story that continues today.
